Why We Finally Got Chickens

Why We Finally Got Chickens

When we started creating Well Living Farms, people always asked, “Do you have chickens yet?” I’d laugh and say, “Not yet, but they’re coming.” The truth? I was waiting. Not for the perfect setup—but for the right energy.

Because for me, this farm isn’t about rushing to do what’s expected. It’s about moving in alignment.

So when the time finally felt right—we got chickens. And just like that, a whole new rhythm emerged on the land.

The Call Was Deeper Than Eggs

Sure, they give us fresh eggs, and yes, they’re adorable. But this decision wasn’t logistical—it was spiritual. Chickens are stewards of the land. They scratch, they peck, they compost. They bring life and movement to the ecosystem. Watching them reminded me: everything has a role, even if it doesn’t look “productive” in the traditional sense.

They embody presence. And presence is what this season of life is all about for me.

Lessons from the Coop

Since bringing them home, these feathered little beings have taught me more than I expected:

  • Routines anchor us. Chickens thrive on daily rhythm. They rise with the sun and return to roost at dusk. That kind of consistency is medicine in a chaotic world.
  • Tending is sacred. Feeding, cleaning, checking on them—it’s not a chore. It’s a ritual. A practice of showing up, daily, with love.
  • Trust your timing. There’s no “too late” when it comes to alignment. Just because others did it sooner doesn’t mean I should’ve.

A Symbol of Sovereignty

Adding chickens to our farm feels like a reclamation. It’s another step toward self-sufficiency and sovereignty. It’s also a gentle reminder that this dream life I’m living—it’s unfolding at my pace, in my way, and on my land.

They’re more than livestock—they’re living mirrors of the energy we hold here: cyclical, communal, grounded.

If You’re Considering Chickens…

Here’s what I’d say: don’t just think about the setup—think about your why. What kind of energy do you want to invite into your space? For us, it was trust, joy, and deeper connection to the earth.

So we welcomed chickens. And they feel like home.
